Vietnam’s seafood export continuously shows high growth in 2007. Through the first half of this year, seafood exports of Vietnam reached US$ 1.65 billion, an increase of over 17% in comparison with the same period in 2006.
EU surpassed Japan as the top importer of Vietnam seafood for the first time with a 25.8% market share. In first six months of this year, the value of seafood export to EU reached US$ 426,610 USD, an increase of 30% over the same period last year. The United States and Japan holds respectively 18.5% and 18.2% of total export value.
Pangasius (tra, basa) is still the top export item. In the first half of 2007, Vietnam’s pangasius export gained US$ 455 million, up 41% over the first half of 2006. EU is the largest importer with 51.2% of total pangasius export value.
The second position in the top seafood export items is frozen shrimp, which brought US$ 136 million to Vietnam. The United States is the top import market of Vietnam’s frozen shrimp in 2007 with 32.4% of market share.
